Our Story

In July 1990, my mother was a young college student pregnant with her first child in the middle of Liberia's civil war. As is the case with most wars, the men go off to fight for their homes while the women are left to care for the home and children that are left behind. Growing up my mother had a group of women that were her backbone. One of these women became my play aunt. She and my mum worked together to make sure they were both able to attend college while also taking care of their families.

In November 1997 my mother left all she knew in Liberia for a chance of giving me a better life in America. She eventually settled in Ohio where she didn’t know anyone aside from a few Liberian women. As they did back in their home country, these women worked together to help each other adjust to life in this strange new land. While my mum attended classes and worked two jobs, I had a series of play aunts who cared for my play cousins and me. Each member of this group took turns working and furthering their education to ensure they were all successful.

As I grew into a young adult, I never forgot the lessons I learnt from my mum and my aunts. Their watchful eyes kept me out of trouble. We all know that the eyes of a mother see more than the eyes of a stranger. (Sorry for the cheesy Walker Texas Ranger reference.)

In August 2011 I met a wonderful Australian man, and I moved to his beautiful country a few years later. The first thing I looked for was my own group of women. I found it very challenging. From that experience, Born by One came to fruition.

Born by One is here to help you find your village, as it takes a village to raise a child. On this site, you will find women and men who are also navigating the world of parenthood. My hope is that you find someone to support you through the ups and downs of parenthood, marriage and life in general.

All my life I've seen examples of women who have stood firmly together and changed their lives and the lives of those around them.
